Command Prompt – people still use that??
July 31, 2009
Ok, so it is clear from the very get go I have taken on a lot more than I should by myself. That, of course, is the story of my days, so why should this be any different? Again, I have no experience with this at this stage, and we are going to see what it takes for a designer to get through something like this.
For thing I am going to need, is some sort of understanding of how to navigate around using the command prompt program. I looked it up, and the code “cd” is the one to remember. At least at my first glance, in trying to get Ruby on Rails installed. “cd” allows you to navigate through your file directories. You can’t just start typing in rails codes….Command Prompt needs to be directed to that location first, in order to then do the functions. My head was about to pop, and I had not even installed Ruby yet? or Rails? Ouch.
Ok, after about an hour, Ruby and Ruby gems were installed. Next step is setting up my development environment. This I have no clue about, but from reference, and am going to use a program called RadRails downloaded from www.radrails.org. It is open source and available, so that will be my next step…
Some words about Ruby on Rails:
I wouldn’t say it is hard for you to find out what people say Rails is. So skip that, and I’ll mention it from a designer’s perspective. I see it as a way to avoid working directly with Databases, cause hey, Ruby does it for you. It is fast and it seems to create a lot of controversy, simply because people who have already master other languages probably don’t want to hear that there favorite scripting language has been topped. I’m sure that is very naive of me, but it is what I see from outside that box. First off, any developer out there reading this blog will be laughing his face of at the subject line of this post. Therefore, as much as my opinion is here right now, I will fully allow others to “show me the light”, if in fact there is any light to see. I will also accept that by the end of this book, I will most likely have changed my opinion more than Mariah Carey changes clothes on a “cribs” episode… I am younger to development, and therefore I do not have to be tied down by 10 years of learning every language under the sun. Whether it is PHP, or Coldfusion, Perl, or ASP.NET, it doesn’t really matter to me. I am new, this is new….why not just start with the most currently, then work backwards if I need to? Makes more sense than learning all the other languages, when in the end, I will most likely just ended up back here, with Ruby on Rails.
So that is all I wanted to catch you up on so far, I’m hitting a road block right now, and it’s a lil embarrassing, so I’ll fill you in on what is holding up this project, once I actually figure it out myself…
Good luck all, and enjoy the day!
-Michael
